Power transformers and the switchbox are the most valuable and expensive equipments of substation/power system in transmission and distribution substations. Any failures of power transformers have a considerable economic impact on the operation of an electrical network and can cause high financial damage. It is well known that the unordinary temperature risen in a power transformer due to load current is one of the most important factors in causing rapid degradation of its insulation and the capability of loading. To accurately monitor the power transformer hot spot, predict load levels, and improve capacity utilization, an accurate measuring and monitoring transformer temperature is of particular importance.

Our optic fiber based multipoint temperature sensor system can be used to monitor temperature directly inside cast and oil filled power transformers and the switchbox. This fiber optic temperature monitoring systems offers the benefits inherent to fiber optic sensing technology, such as the insensitivity to EMI/RFI, high voltage insulation and capable of taking remote, on-line multi location measurements. The accurate and reliable temperature measurements help to predict optimize the dynamic loading of high voltage transformers, hence prevents premature failures and extends transformer life.

This temperature monitor system (MS-GXWD 6000) is capable to drive up 32 channels, and each channel can connect up to 12 sensors. The total maximum number of temperature monitor points can be 384. The measured temperature signals are demodulated and converted into corresponded data that are then collected through RS232, USB or Parallel interface and restored in a host industrial control computer. The FBG based sensing probe is hosted in a purposed designed package. The material used is capable of withstanding up to 110kV high voltage. The measured temperature range is -20ˇăC to 130ˇăC.

This multi point temperature monitoring system can be used to measure and monitor different types of electrical equipments, such as high voltage switchboxes, oil temperature in transformers and circuit-breaker switchgears.
